Senior Operations Technician

Job Description:
Highly skilled to advanced technical expertise working on complex network
/switching system equipment installation and/or maintenance assignments.
Strong knowledge of products from multiple vendors. Utilizes advanced
technical expertise and problem solving skills to resolve complex
narrowband, broadband, switch and networking issues at the site. Schedules
and prioritizes activities of as well as providing guidance and direction
for subordinate field/site engineering jobs. Provides on-site coordination
of related activities (ordering equipment, interface with engineering staff
and customers)

The Qwest Senior Operations Technician responsibilities include but are not
limited to:
* Strong technical skill level working on complex assignments within
the network systems installation and/or maintenance activities
* Diagnostic testing ability on multiple telecommunication platforms
* Understand the fundamentals of AC and DC power
* Resolves complex network problems involving power, network hardware
and software, lines, modems and terminals
* Uses software and hardware tools to identify and diagnose network
status and problems; conducts complex network monitoring equipment
installation and maintenance activities; resolves complex trouble tickets
* Test and turn-up new circuits, responsible for cross-connects and
any other wiring
* Troubleshoot and repair any hardware issues
* A high level of organization, and proficient with Excel spreadsheets
including Microsoft Word, and Outlook
* Ability to understand and communicate using technical concepts,
practices and terminology
* Ability to self-manage responsibilities in order to achieve daily
results
* Ability to provide effective guidance and direction to team members
* Initiate and provide input on engineering plans for construction
work around fiber optic cable and transport engineering projects.
* Competent in all duties/tasks during fiber restorations and hot-cuts
at work location or in sites.
* Read and interpret As-Built drawings, provide updates as necessary.
* Perform cable locate functions, by utilizing OTDR equipment and
As-Build drawings.
* Supervise construction work on or around fiber optic cable.
* Performs route surveillance.

Basic Qualifications:
* Associate degree in Engineering, Electronics, Software, or
telecommunication Networks; or a related technical, vocational education or
equivalent applicable work experience.
* Nortel OC48, OC192 ; Cisco 15454; Ciena ONI DWDM , and Ciena
Corestream experience preferred
* Installation and maintenance of design service circuits
* 2 or more years of experience with power AC/DC experience including
batteries and diesel engine generators.
* Prefer previous experience with an RBOC or other telephone company
PREFERRED Job Qualifications:
* At least 12 months experience within the last five (5) years
diagnosing circuit trouble, and performing routine testing, including
measuring AC/DC current using volt ohm meters, TDR, or comparable test
equipment.
* At least 12 months experience within the last five (5) years
provisioning and maintaining Nortel OC48, OC192 and Ciena Corestream
Other Requirements of the job:
. This is a 24/7/365 day position with pager duty
. Must have a valid drivers license.
. Ability to obtain a TS security clearance

Work Environment:
* Must be able to lift or move up to 100+ pounds
* Wear appropriate safety equipment and follows company safety
procedures
* Work independently and must meet deadlines accordingly
* Will be working aloft on ladders at times.
* May be confined to a position for extended periods of time
* Must be willing and able to work with other team members to complete
job assignments.
* Work both inside & outside.

Job Description:

This position is responsible for the development, testing, installation and
maintenance of Network Element rules and scripts, including integrated
switch facilities, and interoffice facility equipment, In the Telcordia
Network Monitoring and Analysis (NMA) system. Technical support and SME to
clients in NROC, NMA database, Design Services and Capacity Provisioning.
Responds to incoming client issues and work requests. Researches and
analyzes client needs and provides solutions for their business needs by
providing trouble ticketing solutions for switch and transport network
elements.

To be successful in this position the selected candidate will demonstrate:
* A compelling track record of successful complex assignments/projects
accomplished with independence, creativity and inter-company partnerships.
* Ability to provide solutions to diverse and complex engineering
problems/projects that typically have many alternatives requiring
customization. Contributes technical expertise to the development,
evaluation and implementation of new principles, processes and applications.
* Accomplishments and work objectives met minimal or no direction.
Regularly exercises judgment for selecting methods and techniques for
obtaining solutions.
* Action in a multi-discipline project leadership role working towards
the development of new solutions, processes, tools, systems for customers.
* Subject matter expertise in at least one area of relevant technology
plus working knowledge of other disciplines. Focus is commonly on
company-wide processes and initiatives. Viewed as technical expert for the
department for introducing new technologies and products into processes and
assessing complex customer requirements.
* Broad decision-making responsibilities including determination and
prioritization of complex customer requirements. Includes customization
and/or creation of engineering policies, practices and procedures.
* Excellent customer contact / service skills for the purpose of
assessing complex requirements and issues. Represents the organization as a
principal technical advisor with customers.
. Formally mentors and/or trains lower-level engineers and peers
within the department.


Basic Qualifications:

* Bachelors degree in Engineering, a related field or equivalent
experience.
* Two years applicable experience.
* Must have extensive background with multiple vendor facilities
equipment.
* Must have basic knowledge of SONET and TIRKS and an in depth
understanding of the NMAT application and NMAT supported business functions
(surveillance/monitoring).
* Pluses are, experience and training in all aspects of NMAT,
especially rules and scripts, database and Equipment Hierarchy Generator.
* Past experience as project/process lead role within department.
* Programming background in any language.
* Self motivated able to perform responsibilities with limited
direction.
* Excellent oral and written communications skills.

* May require periodic travel.
* Will be required to carry a pager/cell phone.
* Will require on-call responsibilities.
